Guess post by Peik-Kuan Lim, Early Literacy Coordinator of the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library

"With the promise of sunshine and warmer weather, the great outdoors beckons us in Oregon during the summer months . Children benefit not only from the absorption of Vitamin D and fresh air, but also from the imaginative, large motor and social play that happens when playing outdoors. All areas of children’s development—physical, social, emotional, cognitive and creative — are enhanced. Outdoor activities can provide children with the opportunity to use all their senses when playing. According to Rae Pica, author of many books including “Jump Into Literacy”, children also learn the following skills while engaging in outdoor play,

• “communication skills and vocabulary (as they invent, modify, and enforce rules).”
• “number relationships (as they keep score and count).”
• “social customs (as they learn to play together and cooperate).”
