Pick of the Week: Jeremy Draws a Monster

Jeremy Draws a Monster by Peter McCarty (Henry Holt and Company, 2009)

Jeremy draws a monster . . . but he doesn't expect it to be bored and hungry--and bossy. With a sure artistic touch and more than a dose of humor, McCarty cleverly blurs the line between his own drawings and Jeremy's, and in doing so subtly questions the line between reality and imagination. Full color. (Summary distributed by Syndetics Solutions, LLC)

Imagination Time

If you could be someone else (or something else) for just one day...who or what would you be? Many a child has enjoyed pretending to be a bear or a lion or a kangaroo. In this brightly colored, retro-styled illustrated picture book, a little boy imagines what it would be like to be an assortment of different creatures for just one day. This is a charming read-aloud that highlights the fun of a good game of pretend, while still acknowledging that it's also great to just be ourselves!

Not only did his physical size grow, but his ego grew right with it! Suddenly Sue-Lin Salamander and Mao-Mao Mudpuppy are not as happy about their friendship with Foo and his boastful ways. Will Foo always think he's the biggest thing around? Will the friendships be mended? This is a sweet and silly tale, with a life lesson or two included.

New book for little fans of Things That Go!

I just ran across this book in our collection yesterday and it has become an instant favorite with a little boy I know. This large-sized, brightly illustrated book covers numerous vehicles - from submarines to bicycles to hovercraft to pogo sticks to ultralight aircraft to spacecraft to trains and emergency trucks - all driven by adorable animals. Young transportation lovers will find a lot here to pour over here. A fully animated wordless DVD brings each page of the book to life. Young viewers can watch the whole book play out on screen or choose a specific environment/page to watch.

Pick of the Week: Truckery Rhymes

Truckery Rhymes by Jon Scieszka, characters and environments developed by the Design Garage--David Shannon, Loren Long, David Gordon

This is a great addition to the truck-themed picture book genre and a lively new take on the nursery rhymes of childhood. Substituting truck-themed rhymes based on classic rhymes and songs take on new life as "Little Dan Dumper," "Pop! Blows the Diesel", and "The Wheels on the Truck." This is a great action-packed collection of rhymes to share with all young truck enthusiasts and fans of Jon Scieszka's Trucktown book series.

Pick of the Week: Shape by Shape

Shape by Shape by Suse MacDonald (Little Simon, 2009)

Caldecott Honoree Suse MacDonald takes on the concept of shapes in this new picture book. MacDonald uses bright colors, shapes, and die-cut pages to entertain children as she teaches about shapes. With each turn of the page, a new shape is introduced. The addition of each shapes slowly turns the page into a creature - a final three-page spread of a Brachiosaurus. Fans of Ed Emberly's books, especially his superb die-cut book, Go Away, Big Green Monster!, will quickly note the resemblances. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, admirers of Emberly's work should be pleased with this result.
